Summary of Chesterfield College FC
Chesterfield college FC in summary is well ran football club. Its main strengths include its structure and facilties. The structure is built well with each employee knowing there roles and responsibilities and do well at completing what jobs need to be done to run the football club. The facilties that have been put in place for the club are outstanding and give each student the tools they need to reach there full potential. The quality provided is a great advantage to the college and allows them to progress. However if the club follows what i have suggested in my previous blogs then they should be able to progress even further and quicker by taking better advantage of the tools they already have in front of them. As a club they are currently doing well but can definetly improve through the areas i have suggested.
Organisational theories and roles at chesterfield college FC
Roles
There are specific roles for staff at chesterfield college FC, this is to make the running of the club smooth and well run. It gives people certain jobs and gives them a role of what they need to do within the club. If each person has a specific duty then this means that the jobs that are needed to be done are delagated to them and it is there responsibilty to get it done. If different jobs are delegated to different people and each person knows there roles then the club will run correctly and be succsefully run as each job that needs to be done is getting completed. There are 3 main people in the running of chesterfield college FC. These people are neil cluxton, dave rushbury and carl vickers.
Neil cluxton - Neil cluxton is first team manager of the squad. He is also head coach and picks what players go into each of his squads. His role is to coach the players and win games for chesterfield college fc. With this role he also has other responsibilities such as organising the fixtures for the club home and away and also trying to promote the club. He is seen as the leader and the person the players should look upto as a rolemodel. "A role model is someone who other individuals aspire to be like, either in the present or in the future" (Business dictionary, 2011)
Dave rushbury - Again dave rushbury is another important role model for the players. He runs the reserve team, this involves picking the starting 11 and coaching them throughout the game. Other responsibilities that dave has took on his being the physio for the side. The players come to dave with any injurys they may have hoping dave can give them advice on how recover from the injury. Having a physiotherapist at the club is a great advantage as it helps the club be fully fit and reduces costs if theres already a physio within the club.
Carl vickers - Carls role within the club is to take on training sessions and warm ups before games. Hes needs to get the players motivated and prepared for games. This is an important role as he can play a big part in preventing injurys by making sure everyone warms up correctly but also getting them motivated an determined to win the game. Carl is another role model as he coaches the players and coaches them on how they can improve as players.
Other roles in the club are taken on by myself as a volunteer and also through other staff such as security guards. Security guards are first aid trained and ready prepared for an unforeseen accidents. They also make sure changing rooms are looked after an there are no issues with thieves. There responsibilities include keeping the safety of the players. As a volunteer myself i help with the running of the club where i can, for example getting equipment ready, helping with coaching sessions and matches also preparing kits and water bottles for the players.
" The formal roles of members of an organisation will usually be set out in an organisational chart which sets out the span of control of the various levels of supervision. The informal roles that people play are less easy to map out but are also very important " ( The times, 100)
Organisational theory
What is organisational theory?
Organisational theory is " A Study of organizational designs and organizational structures, relationship of organizations with their external environment, and the behavior of managers and technocrats within organizations. It suggests ways in which an organization can cope with rapid change".
The organisation theory is broken down into 4 different areas. Each area explains the effects on a business and highlights areas which could be improved or what could be a threat on the business. These four areas include : . Physical structure
. Social Hierachy
. Culture achievement + process
. Technology
Physical structure
The physical structure put in place for chesterfield college FC is definetely one of its strengths. It is based at the clowne college campus which is a recently built modern buliding. The benefits this modern building includes are not only its looks but its upto date facilties it contains. With two astro turfs, football pitches, home and away changing rooms, indoor sportshall and disabled access throughout the college the physical structure is a big strength of chesterfield college. The benefits of having a good physical structure include the attraction it has towards getting students to want to come to chesterfield college as there first choice because of the facilties it contains. Also having a good physical structure should give students the tools to reach there full potential benefiting the college with even better results.
Technology
Chesterfield college FC has began to use modern day technology to its advantage. With the recent help of volunteers its allowed the club to do detailed match reports of the fixtures and they have been able to email these reports to local newspapers. Before this was a harder task as letters may have been sent and not emails affecting the time process of when the reports may have been published. Also video technology is being used to show highlights of the fixtures and views of the players. This technology we are hoping to upload to the college website which will help raise the profile of the club. Technolgy has become an important area for the club as it allows the club to gain more awareness and improve what they can do with the club
Social Hierachy
Social hierachy is how the employees are structured within the company or organisation. This can be key to how well the company is run and to how succsesful it could be. Chesterfield college is goverment ran and its structured in a organsied way. The club is structured with the first team manager at the top (Neil) acting as the leader, then below Dave rushberry as reserve team coach and lecturer then leading to carl vickers as fitness coach and lecturer. After this comes other members such as the volunteers and security guards. The benefits of having a social hierachy are that each person will know their own role and responsibility. Therefore each responsibility is covered and done by a specific person but the disadvantages to this system can be that if someone was to leave the hierachy or be sick then its leaves a gap where there roles and responsibilties were. If this was to happen a higher person in the hierachy would need to be informed so the gap could be filled. The problem could be that they arent informed quick enough so roles are not done or that they dont have the volume of staff to cover for this position.
Achievement culture
Achievement culture is where you are rewarded for achieving goals and doing well. In terms of what this means for chesterfield college football club is that if the team does well and wins trophies then this can lead to more media awareness giving more funding towards the football club. But also this can link in with the college. If students do well in exams and achieve good grades this can lead to extra goverment funding and positive awareness of the college.
Process culture
Process culture impacts on how the organisation is run in terms of the impacts laws and legislations may have on the organisation. For example Chesterfield college FC must adhere to laws and legislations such as health and safety. This can impact on what the organisation can do and sets the rules as to how they should run as an organisation.

CCFC next steps
I feel that if CCFC were to progress as a football club they would need to concentrate on advertising in the local area. Areas in which they should look to advertise should be:
. Radio
.Television
. Websites
. Newspapers
If they could make some local partnerships with companys such as 'peak 107' or 'The derbyshire times' this could help them raise their profile on a much bigger scale. The advantages of doing this could be great. For example more advertising could attract more players giving themselves a better chance of having better squads. It would increase particpation which could lead to an increase of funding. Also the chain could continue with progessing the club further through funding leading to more jobs due to the increased particpation through advertising. Another great way they could advertise is by ceasing the oppotunity of using the college website. The website creates a great oppotunity to get information about the club available to all students but also give match reports and review for parents and others interested. I feel the benefits could be great for the club if they were to advertise and get links locally. It would help them achieve their objectives much quicker and efficently.

The main Problem facing CCFC
The main problem facing CCFC is the lack of media coverage and advertising that it has. Without advertising the club will struggle to get people to get involved and being able to allow them to participate. " a business that stops advertising may give the impression that the business is out of business. When people see a business advertise for a long period of time and then stop, they may get the false impression that the business is no longer there, even though it is still open. Consistent advertising yields the best results."(why not advertise, 2010) so for example if we were to not advertise then people may think that the club has stopped running. Which would mean the club wouldnt be getting all the potential people it may attract and also it would hinder the profile of the club. If particpation levels decrease this could lead to further cuts in the budget for the club, and seriously affect the running of the club." a specialist sports college, had its sports grant cut by 80% this year. " (Guardian, 2011) this sort of cut would affect the club in terms of where it can go and what it can do. With this huge a cut the club would struggle to keep its best assests such as its facilties but also it wouldnt be able to hold as many sessions or matches at the club as they physically would not be able to afford it.This would seriously threat the running of the club. The club needs to make sure that it is well advertised and links up with local media to help raise its profile. If the club can raise its profile this could lead to better oppotunites and further funding. It would also make the club nationally recognised and reflect well on the college and the local area. Currently the club does little advertising and has no interaction with any of the local media. If partnerships with newspapers such as the derbyshire times or the radios peak 107 were made we could see a real increase in the profile and particpation in the club. This could only help generate more funding for the club and give the college more recognition. If it made these links better oppotunities would come along. It may give them the finance to better there equipment, and even further better the facilties which will give the club an outstanding chance of reaching there objectives. The benefits of these links are clear to see and it would be valuable to the club if they were to advertise through these links as it leads to the oppotunities i have previously suggested.

S.W.O.T analysis of CCFC
"SWOT Analysis is a useful technique for understanding your Strengths and Weaknesses, and for identifying both the Opportunities open to you and the Threats you face" (Mind tool,2011)
A SWOT analysis would be useful for CCFC as it would allows them to evaluate their orginisation and identify there own oppotunitys and threats.
Here is my SWOT analysis of CCFC:
Strengths
. Funded
.Good staff (qualified)
. Great facilities
. location
Weaknesses
. Lack of media coverage
. advertising
. Reliability of players
. Reliant on students
Oppotunities
. Partnerships
. Advertising
. Awareness
Threats
. Goverment funding cuts
. Staff leaving
The main strength of CCFC is the facilties it posseses. The club has two large astros it can train on, two football pitches, a indoor sports hall, Gym, and changing rooms for both teams. These facilties are key in making sure students have the right tools to reach their potential. The facilties make the college look a very attractive option in which to join. The other strengths the club posseses are qualifed coaches who will get the best out of the students and further educate them helping them reach their full potential but also another strength of the club is the base in which it is located, as it easy to accsess with plenty of public transport making it easy for students to travel too.
The main weakness of CCFC is the reliability of the players. Having everything in place is brilliant, but if you dont have the students turn up then there is no point in having the best facilties. The club needs to make sure students turn up and particpate so they can reach their full potential and reach the goals of the college. Therefore they could offer incentives to players that turn up more than others. Other weaknesses such as lack of media coverage need to be adressed so that CCFC can keep raising its profile and keep improving. Without this the club may stay where it is at now and not further improve.
The best oppotunities that CCFC have are that they have the potential to get involved in some great partnerships with other well known companies to help promote CCFC. An advantage of a partnership can be " Increased participation through diversity of opportunity, linking together clubs as well as public and private sector provision" (sports england, 2011) The partnerships could provide funding and help raise the profile of the club on a bigger scale. The club could also use the website as a oppotunity to advertise the club and put on match reports and reviews to increase its profile.
The biggest threat that the club faces it goverment funding. If any funding is cut this will see the club needing to raise money from elsewhere. If they cant do this we will see less equipment available and and less oppotunitys being availble at the club. It may mean players having to pay for their own kits which they cant afford therefore they wont play and there wouldnt be as much particpation at the club.
"SWOT Analysis can be used to "kick off" strategy formulation, or in a more sophisticated way as a serious strategy tool. You can also use it to get an understanding of your competitors, which can give you the insights you need to craft a coherent and successful competitive position." (mindtool, 2011)

P.E.S.T analysis of CCFC
Kotler (1998) suggests that PEST analysis is a useful strategic tool for understanding market growth or decline, also potential and direction for operations. This is why PEST analysis can be such a useful tool as it can give direction to an orginisation on where to go in its own environment.
"In conducting PEST analysis, it is required to consider each PEST factor as they all play a part in determining the overall business environment" ( K, Hall, 1993, reports on different companies) .
When PEST is broken down it is broken down into four seperate areas. These areas are:
Political
Economic
Social
Technological
"The company is able to determine the changes needed to exploit the opportunities, and blunt the threats" (Pearce and Robinson, 2005).
This helps them as it allows them to avoid any threats and forsee most problems. Therefore avoiding any problems that may occur in the business.
Here is my PEST analysis of CCFC:
Political:
.CRB checks for staff
. legislation acts
. Health + safety
. Equality
. Ofstead
Economic:
. Term time Job
. Goverment funded
. Budgets
Social:
. Religion
. Media
. Image
. Presentation
Technological:
. Website
. Advertising
. equipement
Further studying my P.E.S.T analysis of CCFC i can see problems that may occur. For example in the political area each member of staff must have a CRB check to work at the college. This prevents some people from applying for any job that may be on offer within the club if they do not have a CRB. however CRB checks are needed for the good of the company. " it is a means of supplying organisations with the information they legally need to enable them to make correct recruitment and placement decisions especially in positions involving children & the vulnerable (ie Protection of Children & Protection of Vulnerable Adults). An organisation will be asking an exempted question under the terms of the Rehabilitation of Offenders act 1974 (Exceptions) Oder 1975." (Protecting children, 2011) CRB checks are put in place for the safety of the orgnisation so it can hire the correct people for the job. Another political area that can cause problems are legislation acts. For example health and safety acts can prevent CCFC from doing certain things. For example they would not be able to play football in conditions where the pitch may be considered 'dangerous' preventing them from playing football and being involved in the sport. Although the main problem for the political side for CCFC is the funding it is given. With the current economical climate, cuts have had to be taken and CCFC is another area where it has seen cuts be made therefore making the everyday running of the club harder as it doesnt have the funds to reach its potential. A cut to funding can effect how much the team trains, the equipment it recieves and the amount of people who will carry there interest in CCFC." Several sixth-form and college heads have said funding changes are forcing them to cut careers guidance, mentors, sports and even A-level courses" (BBC, 2010)
Econmically the club does well. As it is goverment funded students dont have to worry about paying to play for the club. This is what makes playing for CCFC an attractive option. Also with the club being seasonal they dont have to worry about being availble and running all year without time to expand as they get chance to over look the club when students have time off. Giving the club time to evaluate where it is at in terms of their objectives.
Chesterfield college can use the media as a massive tool to attract students to play for the team but also use the media to help build the profile of the club. The media can involve advertising the club throught newspapers, radio, and television which can all help massively in promoting the club. A mission statement of a current media company reads " Our mission is to promote the game of football to grow rapidly and profitably through innovative commercial opportunities and partnerships in establishing football a an attractive product" ( Tonga football 2011) this shows the positive effect on what the media can have on football. CCFC needs to take advanatage of its local media such as the derbyshire times to promote itself and raise its profile
Technology is an area in which CFFC needs to improve. Despite the college having a website it shows no coverage of CCFC on it lacking any real ambition to promote its self as a college. There needs to be more technology used to raise the profile of the club. If there was use of the website for CCFC this could encourage more people to get involved as this way they may know more about the club and be encouraged by any pictures or reviews of matches they see.
"PEST analysis looks at the external business environment and is an appropriate strategic tool for understanding the "big picture" of the environment in which business operates, enabling the company to take advantage of the opportunities and minimize the threats faced by thier business activities" (Byars, L, 1991)

Objectives of CCFC
The objective of the college football team is to progress the football side to the highest leagues it can go and develop the side to be known nationally as one of the best
The vision that CCFC has follows the vision statement that the college has provided...
"Our vision is that by 2015 we will become recognised nationally as an outstanding college by learners, employers, partners, regulators and the people who work for us". As a football club they want to be recognised nationally for being outstanding at achieving students potential and being a great team to play for. Vision statements are good for the college to have as they give a vision for people looking at the college, but also a vision for staff and students to follow. It gives them a purpose to work towards to, and also an indication as to how to behave as a student or member of staff of the college. "By crafting a clear mission statement and vision statement, you can powerfully communicate your intentions and motivate your team or organization to realize an attractive and inspiring common vision of the future." (Mind tools, 2010)
The mission statement of chesterfield college is ...
"Equipping you with the skills and knowledge for progression and employment." (chesterfield college, 2011)
Mission statements become an important part of a business as they give the organisation a purpose, and give owners and staff motivation to achieve goals set by the orginisation. The mission statement set by chestefield college for my placement is set to motivate the coaches in the football club to strive to do their best and progress as employees.
"a mission statement is potentially an invaluable tool for formulating and implementing an orginizations strategy" ( Mark C, Baetz, Christopher, K, Bart, developing mission statements that work, 1999)
I feel that mission statements are one of the most powerful tools in outlining what an organisation may want from its employees and is a great technique in getting across what is expected of its employees. I believe that having a mission statement would give an orginisation a much better chance to succeed and do well.
