P.E.S.T analysis of CCFC

Kotler (1998) suggests that PEST analysis is a useful strategic tool for understanding market growth or decline, also potential and direction for operations. This is why PEST analysis can be such a useful tool as it can give direction to an orginisation on where to go in its own environment.

"In conducting PEST analysis, it is required to consider each PEST factor as they all play a part in determining the overall business environment" ( K, Hall, 1993, reports on different companies) .

When PEST is broken down it is broken down into four seperate areas. These areas are:

Political

Economic

Social

Technological

"The company is able to determine the changes needed to exploit the opportunities, and blunt the threats" (Pearce and Robinson, 2005).

This helps them as it allows them to avoid any threats and forsee most problems. Therefore avoiding any problems that may occur in the business.

Here is my PEST analysis of CCFC:

Political:
.CRB checks for staff
. legislation acts
. Health + safety
. Equality
. Ofstead

Economic:
. Term time Job
. Goverment funded
. Budgets

Social:
. Religion
. Media
. Image
. Presentation

Technological:
. Website
. Advertising
. equipement

Further studying my P.E.S.T analysis of CCFC i can see problems that may occur. For example in the political area each member of staff must have a CRB check to work at the college. This prevents some people from applying for any job that may be on offer within the club if they do not have a CRB. however CRB checks are needed for the good of the company. " it is a means of supplying organisations with the information they legally need to enable them to make correct recruitment and placement decisions especially in positions involving children & the vulnerable (ie Protection of Children & Protection of Vulnerable Adults). An organisation will be asking an exempted question under the terms of the Rehabilitation of Offenders act 1974 (Exceptions) Oder 1975." (Protecting children, 2011) CRB checks are put in place for the safety of the orgnisation so it can hire the correct people for the job. Another political area that can cause problems are legislation acts. For example health and safety acts can prevent CCFC from doing certain things. For example they would not be able to play football in conditions where the pitch may be considered 'dangerous' preventing them from playing football and being involved in the sport. Although the main problem for the political side for CCFC is the funding it is given. With the current economical climate, cuts have had to be taken and CCFC is another area where it has seen cuts be made therefore making the everyday running of the club harder as it doesnt have the funds to reach its potential. A cut to funding can effect how much the team trains, the equipment it recieves and the amount of people who will carry there interest in CCFC." Several sixth-form and college heads have said funding changes are forcing them to cut careers guidance, mentors, sports and even A-level courses" (BBC, 2010)

Econmically the club does well. As it is goverment funded students dont have to worry about paying to play for the club. This is what makes playing for CCFC an attractive option. Also with the club being seasonal they dont have to worry about being availble and running all year without time to expand as they get chance to over look the club when students have time off. Giving the club time to evaluate where it is at in terms of their objectives.

Chesterfield college can use the media as a massive tool to attract students to play for the team but also use the media to help build the profile of the club. The media can involve advertising the club throught newspapers, radio, and television which can all help massively in promoting the club. A mission statement of a current media company reads " Our mission is to promote the game of football to grow rapidly and profitably through innovative commercial opportunities and partnerships in establishing football a an attractive product" ( Tonga football 2011) this shows the positive effect on what the media can have on football. CCFC needs to take advanatage of its local media such as the derbyshire times to promote itself and raise its profile

Technology is an area in which CFFC needs to improve. Despite the college having a website it shows no coverage of CCFC on it lacking any real ambition to promote its self as a college. There needs to be more technology used to raise the profile of the club. If there was use of the website for CCFC this could encourage more people to get involved as this way they may know more about the club and be encouraged by any pictures or reviews of matches they see.
"PEST analysis looks at the external business environment and is an appropriate strategic tool for understanding the "big picture" of the environment in which business operates, enabling the company to take advantage of the opportunities and minimize the threats faced by thier business activities" (Byars, L, 1991)
